The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare's boldest and most debated comedies. When the headstrong Katharina is matched with the equally determined Petruchio, the result is a clash of personalities that is by turns funny, infuriating, and surprisingly tender. It's a play that has sparked arguments for centuries — and that's exactly what makes it great classroom material.
Shakespeare's comedies are full of big personalities and sharp dialogue — but the formal language and Elizabethan context can make the humor and conflict hard to feel. Students deserve to meet Katharina and Petruchio on their own terms, not filtered through four centuries of unfamiliar phrasing.
Modern Shakespeare Reader's Theater puts students right in the middle of the action. This 8-page script adapts The Taming of the Shrew into lively, accessible language that brings out the comedy, the conflict, and the complexity of its characters. Reader's Theater means the whole class gets a part — and plenty of opportunity to debate who, exactly, gets the last word.
